In 2023 I decided to combine my passion for knitting and crochet with my linguistic skills and branch out into offering services to help designers of knitting and crochet patterns reach as many makers as possible with high quality, easy to understand and inclusive patterns. There’s more information on my experience and skills below, but first I’ll pass the mic to some of my clients…
My formal training in tech editing has largely been with Carol Ibbetson of Cool Wool School – I graduated from her knitting tech editor course in April 2023, the crochet course in August 2023 and garment grading course in January 2024. In spring 2024 I completed an Introduction to Size Inclusive Design course with Kim McBrien Evans, complemented by a mini-series on different sweater constructions.

From a personal perspective, I have been knitting & crocheting since around 2013 and have taken workshops and made projects with many, many different techniques – I really love learning new things and challenging myself! Just a few examples:
brioche ~ stranded colourwork ~ mosaic knitting & crochet ~ entrelac ~ tunisian crochet ~ steeking
in the round ~ flat ~ sideways construction ~ modular construction ~ garment alterations
My “other hat” is as a freelance linguist. Now, although tech editing involves a lot of maths, the reason I was first attracted to it was because I really wanted to be able to use my linguistic skills to help make patterns as clear and unambiguous as possible, in accessible language. I am qualified to Masters level in language studies and with over 10 years of experience working with translation every day, I have an excellent eye for detail, spotting mistakes and how to express something clearly.

So, what can I help you with?
The reason I chose to brand myself as “a certain style pattern services” is because there are many things I would like to help designers and pattern companies with! Any of the below can be combined, but if you request both pattern writing and tech editing for a single pattern, I will do the pattern writing and will outsource a trusted & qualified colleague for the tech editing, since best practice is for the tech editor to be a fresh pair of eyes!
- Tech editing for knitting or crochet – let’s discuss your specific project & we can agree a brief with exactly what you want to be checked & how you want changes marked.
- Size inclusive pattern grading
- Style Sheet creation to help you maintain consistency throughout your patterns
- Pattern writing if you have your notes but want me to write it all up
- Pattern translations from French or Spanish into English
- Proofreading patterns in English, that you’ve translated yourself or written in English but want a first-language speaker or second pair of eyes to check (linguistic focus only)
